New DGNB and LEED Version faces planners and auditors with new challenges

22.02.2016 Building certification systems for sustainable buildings are constantly changing. Since 2015 LEED offers a new version of their certification system of buildings (LEED v4). By DGNB there is a new version for the construction of office and administrative buildings (DGNB NBV15).

Since 2015, the DGNB has introduced a new version of a certification system for the construction of office and administrative buildings.

While the criteria group “Design quality” (SOC3.1 process for urban planning and design conception, SOC3.2 architectural art, SOC3.3 plan qualities) in the new version of DGNB NBV15 is no longer considered, other criteria have been revised.

LCA – new database and environmental categories require a modification of the software

New in criterion ENV 2.1 “LCA – resource consumption” is the calculation of the LCA values for abiotic resource consumption of renewable resources (ADPE in kg Sb eq.) and mineral resources (ADPF in MJ), and water consumption of fresh water (FW in m³). The LCA must be prepared on the basis of Ökobau.dat, 2015. For this you will find more information under www.oekobilanz-bau.de. Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) in accordance with DIN EN 15804 or 14025 are preferred to the databases from the Ökobau.dat.

Assessment of gas fire risks of building materials is no longer part of the DGNB certification

Fire gas risks of construction material is no longer considered in the criterion SOC 1.7 “Safety and accident risks”.

Changes in the criterion “Risks for the Local Environment”

There were also changes in the criterion ENV1.2 “Risks to the Local Environment.” Subsequent construction materials and application areas are additionally considered in the future:

  • Insulation adhesive
  • Sealants and adhesives in the area of glass construction, facade and fire protection
  • Hybrid adhesive and hybrid sealants
  • Articles of plastics (windows, foils, electrical cables, etc.)
  • Flame retardant construction products
  • Textile floor coverings (carpet)
  • Concrete release agents (oils and release agents)
  • Concrete contact
  • etc.

New challenges for product manufacturers by LEED v4

Also the certification system LEED published a new version last year. In LEED v4 points can now be achieved by Enivronmental Product Declarations (EPD) in the Credit MR “Buidling Product Disclosure and Optimization”. In addition, requirements relating to the procurement of raw materials and material components are queried for building materials. You can get points for evidences such as Sustainability Reports or take-back programs of products, also for reporting the material ingredients (greenscreen, Cradle to Cradle, Health Product Declaration).

Requirements easily solved – our product declaration greenbuildingproducts.eu

Currently we offer an assessment of your products according to DGNB NBV 12 and 15, and LEED v3. A declaration by LEED v4 is available until mid of this year. In preparation for LEED v4, we can offer our workshop.

This event enables your employees from product management and marketing to obtain a good and quick insight into the certification systems LEED, DGNB and BREEAM. We also explain the details of the requirements for certification systems and the related challenges in accordance with new versions (DGNB 15 and LEED V4) related to your products now and in the future.

We can assist you in the classification of your products according to LEED & DGNB criteria >> contact
