BREEAM

The certification system BREEAM (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) from the UK has been established by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

It assesses the following categories:

• Energy
• Health and Wellbeing
• Innovation
• Land Use and Ecology
• Materials
• Management
• Pollution
• Transport
• Waste
• Water

Two versions of the core system exist; one is intended for the UK, the other one for international assessments. It allows the certification of the following building types:

• Residential
• Offices
• Industrial
• Retail
• Education (Schools, Universities, etc.)
• Residential institutions (Long term stay)
• Hotels and Residential institutions (Short term stay)
• Non-standard building types (Theatre, Cinema, Prison, etc.)

Buildings are awarded “acceptable” (< 30%, in-use scheme only), “pass” (30%), “good” (45%), “very good” (55%), “excellent” (70%) or “outstanding” (85%).
